When installing shocks on '86-'15 XL models, modifying or spacing the chain/belt guard might be necessary for proper clearance. Before purchasing shocks with a different length than the OEM, ensure altered wheel travel doesn't cause clearance issues (e.g., swingarm/axle to exhaust contact, chain/belt guard or tire contact). Heavy Duty Applications are recommended for bikes that are operated at or near the manufacturer's maximum load rating over 50% of the time.
